'There is a contentment and general prosperity about Bloemfontein which is apt to make a dweller in busy cities think that though it might not quite suit himself, it would be very good for everybody else.'

ANTHONY TROLLOPE, South Africa (1878)

Northwest Region

This vast thinly populated area, mountainous in the east, comprises rolling prairie, maize fields, Karoo scrub and semi-desert. Small numbers of Bushmen still live here, descendants of the bands of hunter-gatherers who used to roam these arid expanses.

The economy of the region relies on agriculture, sustained in many places by irrigation from the Vaal and Orange rivers, and on the mining of diamonds around Kimberley and gold in the Free State. With the growth of tourism in South Africa, many farmers have turned to game farming to attract commercial hunters to the area. Visitors come to the region for the fine game reserves, the spring flowers of the Northern Cape, and for peace and quiet. The more active will find rafting and canoeing on the Orange River, many recently opened 4x4 trails, and a variety of hiking trails through rugged, sun-scorched landscapes.
